The Hennessy Gold Cup
The Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup is one of the most prestigious handicap races run during the national hunt season. Run in late November/early December the Hennessy Gold Cup is hosted by Newbury Racecourse.
The Hennessy Gold Cup is rated a Grade 3 national hunt steeplechase. The race is open to 5 year old and above qualified chasers, and is run over a distance of 3 miles 2½ furlongs, with participants required to clear 21 fences during the course of the Hennessy Gold Cup.
The Hennessy Gold Cup was first run in 1957 at Cheltenham Racecourse, moving to Newbury in 1960. Many consider the race to be the most important run prior to the King George VI Chase, and the race attracts many entries that also competed in the Paddy Power Gold Cup.
Hennessy Gold Cup Betting & Trends
Weight: Weight is not a major consideration in the Hennessy Gold Cup. Four of the last five winners were carrying over 11st, with winning weights ranging from 10st 5lbs to top weight 11st 12lbs.
Age: The last five race winners have all been aged between 6 and 9.
Odds: The last five winners have been priced between 9/4 and 25/1, with four winners coming home priced 10/1 or lower. Two antepost favourites have won during this period.
Jockey: Ruby Walsh has won the Hennessy Gold Cup twice since 2003.
Trainer: Paul Nicholls has trained three winners in the last decade.
Hennessy Gold Cup Tip: Look at entries priced in the 10/1 margin, and don’t pay too much attention to weights. Quality horses tend to come through in this event, so an each-way bet on the favourite and a spread of entries under the 10/1 margin should pay dividends.
Hennessy Gold Cup Winners
Some impressive national hunt racehorses have made their mark at the Hennessy Gold Cup before going on to claim major race victories. The most recent of these was Denman, who won the Hennessy Gold Cup in 2007 before going on to score an upset win in the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup. In 2009 Denman became the first horse since Arkle to win the Hennessy Gold Cup twice, and the only horse in the history of the race to win back the Hennesy Gold Cup.
Other famous racehorses to have won the Hennessy Gold Cup include three times Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Arkle, who won the Hennessy Gold Cup twice, as well as Mill House, who claimed the rare treble of the Hennessy Gold Cup, Cheltenham Gold Cup and King George VI Chase in a single year.
