Finale Juvenile Hurdle

The Finale Juvenile Hurdle is one of the key juvenile races of the national hunt season. The race takes place in December during the course of the annual Welsh National meeting at Chepstow Racecourse in Wales.

Entry to the Finale Juvenile Hurdle is restricted to 3-year-old novice hurdlers. These run a distance of 2 miles 110 yards during the course of the race, with entries required to clear 8 hurdles during the course of the Finale Juvenile Hurdle.

The Finale Juvenile Hurdle is the primary trial event for one of the most important races at the Cheltenham Festival, the Triumph Hurdle. Race winners also tend to go on to race in the Anniversary 4-Y-O Novices’ Hurdle at the Aintree Festival.

The Finale Juvenile Hurdle combines with the Triumph Hurdle and Anniversary 4-Y-O Novices’ Hurdle to create the unofficial UK Novice Hurdlers Triple Crown.

Finale Juvenile Hurdle Betting Tips

  • The winner of the Finale Juvenile Hurdle is notoriously difficult to predict, with race winners in the past decade priced anywhere from below evens to 40/1 in the antepost betting markets.
  • The poor success rate of antepost favourites opens this race up for some good lay betting opportunities. With antepost favourites winning around 2 in 10 races, punters can cash in on the Finale Juvenile Hurdle by laying the favourite at a betting exchange like Betfair of WBX.
  • Punters set on backing a racehorse in this race should keep in mind that the majority of race winners are priced below 7/1, and that best value and odds of a return are therefore found in the 4/1-7/1 margin using place and each-way bets.

Finale Juvenile Hurdle History

The Finale Juvenile Hurdle was originally known as the Welsh Junior Finale Hurdle. The race has been abandoned twice during its history, with consecutive cancellations in 1988 and 1989. During its history the Finale Juvenile Hurdle has produced a number of notable hurdlers who have gone on to achieve success in major hurdles races.

Recently Walkon won the Finale Juvenile Hurdle before going on to claim victory in the Anniversary 4-Y-O Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree. Before this French raider Good Bye Simon won the Finale Juvenile Hurdle before achieving further Grade 1 success in France.
