Fighting Fifth Hurdle History

The Fighting Fifth Hurdle is named in honour of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, also known as the 5th Foot Regiment. The race has been run since 1979 and tends to attract the biggest names in hurdles racing, many of whom go on to compete in either the Champion Hurdle or World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Some of the biggest names in hurdles racing have won the Fighting Fifth Hurdle. Amongst these is the famous Sea Pidgeon, who won the race in 1978 and 1980, and would later go on to become the oldest racehorse ever to win the Champion Hurdle. In recent years Noel Meade’s Harchibald impressed racing fans by winning the Fighting Fifth Hurdle for the first time in 2004 before coming back 3 years later to take his second title.
