The Christmas Hurdle

The Christmas Hurdle is the hurdles highlight of the annual King George VI Chase Christmas Meeting at Kempton Park Racecourse. The race is run on Boxing Day and acts as one of the primary trial races for the Cheltenham Festival’s Champion Hurdle. Entry to the Christmas Hurdle is open to four-years-old or above racehorses. A distance of 2 miles is covered in the race.

The Christmas Hurdle makes up the second leg of the Triple Crown of Hurdles, a collection of three Grade 1 hurdles races that also includes the Fighting Fifth Hurdle and the Champion Hurdle. Any horse that manages to land all three of the Triple Crown of Hurdles events wins a bonus prize of £1 million.

The Christmas Hurdle has been run at Kempton Park Racecourse since 1979. During its history the race has featured a number of the most successful hurdles racehorses in the history of British national hunt racing, including the likes of Dawn Run and Harchibald.

Christmas Hurdle Betting

Age: The vast majority of Christmas Hurdle winners fall in the 5- to 6-year-old age range. Winners in the last five years have, however, included one 9-year-old.
Odds: Two antepost favourites have won this race in the past five years with no winner priced over 10/1.
Jockey: Paul Carberry has won the Christmas Hurdle three times in the last five years.
Trainer: Trainer Noel Meade has a knack for finding Christmas Hurdle winners, training four winners in the past five years.
Race Tip: This is a tough race to bet on. If you’re willing to lay at high odds, go for horses over the 10/1 price margin. However, it seems wiser to pick a winner, looking to back a handful of selections priced beneath the 10/1 margin.

Christmas Hurdle Winners

Horses that win the Christmas Hurdle on the path to victory in the Champion Hurdle include the aforementioned Dawn Run. Flat trainer Sir Michael Stoute trained the only horse to have won the Triple Crown of Hurdles – Kribensis.

The grey gelding achieved this feat in the 1989-1990 season, winning his second Christmas Hurdle title in the process and thereby becoming the first racehorse in Christmas Hurdle history to win the race in two consecutive seasons.
