The Challow Novices’ Hurdle is one of the premier hurdles events for novices in the United Kingdom. This Grade 1 hurdles race is run in December/January at Newbury Racecourse.
The Challow Novices’ Hurdle is open to 4-year-old novice hurdlers. The Challow Novices’ Hurdle covers a distance of 2 miles 5 furlongs and requires entries to clear 10 hurdles.
During its history the Challow Novices’ Hurdle has tended to attract racehorses that are being groomed for appearances in some of the most important national hunt races. As a result a handful of national hunt racing’s superstars can be found on the Challow Novices’ Hurdle winners lists.
Notable winners of the Challow Novices’ Hurdle include Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Denman, and Cheltenham Festival William Hill Trophy winner, Wichita Lineman. During its history the Challow Novices’ Hurdle has been abandoned a number of times, and was suspended between 1995 and 1998.
