Betfair Chase

The Betfair Chase is one of the richest and most important Grade 1 national hunt steeplechases in the United Kingdom. While the event lacks the history and heritage of many other top class chases, its substantial purse ensures that it is recognized as one of the most important events of the first half of the national hunt season.

The Betfair Chase is open to 5-years-old or above racehorses. The race takes place at Haydock Racecourse in November, and covers an intermediate distance of 3 miles. The Betfair Chase requires entries to jump 16 fences.

The Betfair Chase is the first leg of the Betfair Millions series. Any horse that places in the Betfair Chase, goes on to finish in the top two at any Cheltenham Festival race and then wins the Grand National at Aintree wins a purse of £1 million.

Even without the bonus payout the Betfair Chase offers a large purse, and is one of the 5 richest national hunt races in the United Kingdom.

Betfair Chase Betting

  • The Betfair Chase has not been around for long enough to allow punters to establish major race trends. Kauto Star’s wins in the race lift the antepost favourite success rate to around 50%, however, the remaining race winners have been priced at relatively long odds.
  • Established winners deserve backing in the Betfair Chase. While each way or place bets on longer odds entries could pay off, the more secure approach is to back the market favourites using place bets, generating modest but safer returns.
  • Use of an odds comparison service can be invaluable in getting best value out of a race which often sees strong contenders priced down to the evens mark.

Betfair Chase History

The Betfair Chase has been run since 2004. The race was created by the betting exchange Betfair, and from the outset was intended to attract some of the top national hunt racehorses in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

During its short history the Betfair Chase has succeeded in its aim of attracting top talent. Winners of the race include the outstanding Kauto Star, who recorded consecutive victories in the race in 2006 and 2007.

Kauto Star’s 2006 win also secured him the Betfair Millions bonus, which in its earlier format paid out wins to racehorses that won both the Betfair Chase and the King George VI Chase in a single season.
