The Becher Chase is British national hunt race that serves as an important trial event for the various ‘Nationals’ that take place in the United Kingdom and Ireland every year. While the race is classified as a lowly listed event, it consistently attracts some of the finest handicap racehorses in the region.
The Becher Chase is run in November at Aintree Racecourse. The race is run over a distance of 3 miles and 2 furlongs, and requires entries to clear 27 fences on the way to the finishing post. The race utilizes the same fences and course used for the Grand National. Entry to the Becher Chase is open to 5-year-old and above racehorses.
The Becher Chase is named in honour of one of the most famous competitors in the history of the Grand National, Martin Becher. The race was introduced to Aintree Racecourse in 1992 as part of an attempt to add events to the racing calendar at the racecourse.
During its history the Becher Chase has produced a number of champions that have gone on to claim victories in the Grand National later in the season. Winners of both races include Amberleigh House, Earth Summit and Silver Birch. The winner of the Becher Chase is traditionally well backed going into the Grand National.
