The Ascot Chase is the national hunt highlight of the Ascot racing calendar. This Grade 1 steeplechase is run during the month of February and is open to steeplechasers over the age of 5.
The Ascot Chase is run over a distance of 2 miles 5½ furlongs on Ascot’s national hunt track, and features 17 fences. The race distance attracts racehorses that are being primed for some of national hunt racing’s premium Grade 1 chases, including the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Queen Mother Champion Chase.
The Ascot Chase was introduced to the national hunt racing calendar in 1995 as part of a program to increase the number of races taking place at Ascot Racecourse every year. The event was originally run over a distance of 1 mile 3½ furlongs.
The Ascot Chase was moved to Lingfield Park during the period when Ascot Racecourse was undergoing renovations. Following its return to Ascot the race distance was changed to the present distance of 2 miles 5½ furlongs.
Despite being one of the newer races on the national hunt racing calendar the Ascot Chase has consistently attracted some of the sports superstars. Notable winners include Kauto Star, Voy Por Ustedes and Tiutchev, who became the first racehorse to claim the race title twice in 2003.
