VRC Stakes Race Guide

The VRC Stakes is one of the four feature races run during Melbourne’s annual Spring Racing Carnival. The race is traditionally held on the Saturday following the running of the Melbourne Cup, and is marketed as the Spring Racing Carnival’s family day, famous for its casual, laid back atmosphere.

A Group One race open to 4-year old and older thoroughbreds, the VRC Stakes is run over a distance of 1400 metres at Flemington racecourse. As such, it is the shortest Group One race run during the Spring Racing Carnival. The VRC Stakes offers a prize fund of AS$1 million.

The VRC Stakes was first run in 1881, and was won by Courtenay. For decades the race was regarded as a minor attraction compared to the Melbourne Cup and Victoria Derby. However, this has changed in recent years, with tens of thousands of spectators packing into Flemington racecourse on VRC Stakes day.

VRC Stakes Betting

VRC Stakes betting tends to attract the most dedicated punters, with the betting markets less influenced by the contributions of casual punters and race goers. VRC Stakes betting markets tend to open at least two months prior to the Spring Racing Carnival.

Because the VRC Stakes features relatively older runners, punters have a somewhat easier task when it comes to attempting to predict performances in the race. At 4 years of age, most thoroughbreds have an established track record, and punters can more reliably gauge runners’ prospects in the VRC Stakes by focusing on their records over a race distance of 1400m.

Complicating matters somewhat, however, is the fact that the VRC Stakes is a handicap race. To accurately predict the winner is therefore something of a hit and miss affair. Punters are better off betting on place, or each way, on a selection of promising runners, looking out for betting specials paying out on extra places.

VRC Stakes Winners

While thoroughbreds are able to race in the VRC Stakes more than once during their careers, only four horses have managed to win the race on more than one occasion. Iolaire was the first horse to accomplish this feat in 1907/1908, while Seascay was the last horse to win a pair of VRC Stakes titles, by winning consecutive VRC Stakes winners titles in 1994 and 1995.
