The Victoria Derby is one of the biggest races in the annual Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. While the Melbourne Cup is considered the most prestigious race of the Carnival, the Victoria Derby is frequently the better attended. In 2006 a Victoria Derby crowd of over 130,000 broke the attendance record for Flemington racecourse.
Being the first race of the Spring Racing Carnival, the Victoria Derby traditionally takes place on the Saturday prior to the Melbourne Cup. The race is run over a distance of 2,500 metres and is open to 3-year old thoroughbreds. The race offers a massive purse of AS$1,5 million.
As the oldest Group One horse race run in Australia, the Victoria Derby was first held in 1855. The race was originally run over a distance of 1½ miles, with this distance adjusted to 2400 metres in 1973 in order to bring the race in line with the metric system. Today the Victoria Derby is also recognised as a significant men’s fashion event.
Victoria Derby Betting
Online sportsbooks open betting on the Victoria Derby several months in advance of the race, allowing punters to take advantage of high ante-post odds. The race is not a handicap event, which means the betting markets can be considered a fairly reliable guide to the form of the runners.
Betting on the Victoria Derby is best done prior to the week leading up to the race, when bets placed by casual punters may distort the betting picture. The race generates a massive amount of media interest, which usually translates into betting specials and bonuses from online sportsbooks looking for Victoria Derby business.

Victoria Derby Winners
The Victoria Derby attracts some of the top thoroughbreds in flat racing, and as such has featured the talents of many of the sport’s most famous competitors. Phar Lap is widely recognised as the greatest of the Victoria Derby winners, winning the race one year before taking the Melbourne Cup.
In recent years Australian trainer Lee Freedman has been the most successful trainer at the Victoria Derby, taking three Victoria Derby winners titles during the last two decades. It is unlikely though that any modern trainer will match the accomplishments of legendary trainer James Scoobie, who won the Victoria Derby 8 times between 1900 and 1937.
