The Racing Post Trophy is one of the final Group 1 races of the British flat racing season. The race takes part at Doncaster, and attracts some of Britain’s leading 2-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies, many of whom will go on to run in the Classics in the following season.
The Racing Post Trophy is one of only a handful of juvenile races run over a mile. This distance provides 2-year-olds with a significant test of stamina, and winners of the race are often targeted for Group 1 races for stayers later on in their racing careers.
Whilst the Racing Post Trophy is open to fillies, it has been dominated by colts throughout its history.
The Racing Post Trophy was first run in 1961, and was originally known as the Timeform Gold Cup. The race endured several sponsorship changes before the Racing Post took up sponsorship responsibilities in 1989.
The Racing Post Trophy has been an important proving ground for top British thoroughbreds during its history, with a number of winners going on to win in the Classics the following season. Notable Racing Post Trophy winners include Oaks winner, Noblesse and Reference Point, the winner of the 1987 Derby and St Leger.
More recently, High Chapparal has emerged as one of the greatest winners in Racing Post Trophy history. Aidan O’Brien’s colt went on to win the Derby, Champion Stakes as well as two races at the lucrative Breeders’ Cup. His victory helped to establish O’Brien as one of the most important players in the recent history of the race.
The Racing Post Trophy provides punters with a final opportunity to bet on a Group 1 thoroughbred race before national hunt racing takes centre stage during the winter months. The race seems to bring out the best in punters, who have helped turn the Racing Post Trophy betting markets into fairly accurate predictors of the race result.
The antepost favourites in the Racing Post Trophy have achieved a winning percentage of around 40% in the race in recent years, with horses priced amongst the top three for a win, achieving an even better success rate. One aspect of the Racing Post Trophy that makes betting on the event tricky is the large number of racehorses competing in each race, with fields of over 12 the norm rather than the exception.
