The Moyglare Stud Stakes is Ireland’s premier race for juvenile thoroughbred fillies. Held at the Curragh Racecourse in late July/early August, the race features fillies that are on track for appearances in major 3-year-old events like the Irish and English Oaks and 1,000 Guineas.
The Moyglare Stud Stakes is run over a distance of 7 furlongs, just off the distance run in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. The winner earns more than a Group 1 title, with an automatic place in the season-ending Breeders’ Cup Fillies’ Turf also allocated to the Moyglare Stud Stakes champion.
There’s no better opportunity to bet on Ireland’s finest thoroughbred juvenile fillies than the Moyglare Stud Stakes. However, betting on the race can be a hit and miss affair, as the Moyglare Stud Stakes has produced several upset winners over recent years.
While the Moyglare Stud Stakes betting favourites have a success record of around 40% upsets are also quite common with over 50% of race winners priced over 5/1. Race statistics suggest that place bets on horses priced below the 8/1 margin are probably the safest bets on the Moyglare Stud Stakes.
Punters should also keep in mind that the Moyglare Stud Stakes tends to attract small fields, with less than 9 fillies generally competing in the race. The small fields add extra value to each-way and place bets, which can in turn be enhanced by making use of odds comparison services.
The Moyglare Stud Stakes has been a part of the Irish racing calendar since 1971, when it was introduced to the Curragh as a 6 furlong sprint event. The event was originally classified as a Group 3 event, but was promoted to Group 2 status in 1979.
It wasn’t until 1983 that the Moyglare Stud Stakes was run as Group 1 race. In 1992 an extra furlong was added to the Moyglare Stud Stakes race distance. The race is named after the group that has sponsored it throughout its history – the Moyglare Stud.
As one of the most important trial races for the Irish 1,000 Guineas and English 1,000 Guineas it is unsurprising to find that a number of Moyglare Stud Stakes winners have gone on to claim victory in the Classics. Recently 2008 Moyglare Stud Stakes winner, Again, went on to win the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
