Coronation Cup Race Guide

The Coronation Cup is one of Britain’s premier races for 4-year-old and above thoroughbred racehorses. The race is held during the course of the 2 day Epsom Derby meeting at Epsom Downs Racecourse, and is run over a distance of approximately 1 mile 4 furlongs.

The distance run in the Coronation Cup attracts entries that previously competed in major 1 mile 4 furlong races for 3-year-olds, such as the Epsom Derby and Irish Derby. The Coronation Cup is also targeted by champion stayers, and has been won by Ascot Gold Cup champions several times during its history.

Coronation Cup Betting

Whilst the Coronation Cup is sometimes overshadowed by the Epsom Oaks and the Epsom Derby during the Derby Meeting, it nevertheless attracts strong interest from dedicated racing fans, keen to see champion 3-year-olds from previous seasons in action.

For much of its history the Coronation Cup has been dominated by 4-year-old thoroughbreds. However, in recent years older racehorses have begun to make their presence felt in the race, and can receive strong backing in the Coronation Cup betting markets.

Racehorses coming into the Coronation Cup off the back of wins in the French, Irish or English Classics, tend to receive excellent support in the Coronation Cup betting markets, and former Classics’ champions have an excellent strike rate in the race, winning over half the Coronation Cups run in the past decade.
Coronation Cup History

The Coronation Cup is regarded as the successor to the Epsom Gold Cup, a race for 3-year-old and above thoroughbreds that had been held at Epsom Downs Racecourse prior to 1902. In 1902 the Epsom Gold Cup was scrapped, and replaced by the Coronation Cup to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII.

During its history the Coronation Cup has been periodically moved to other thoroughbred racecourses. During the First World War the Coronation Cup was moved to Newmarket Racecourse, and it returned to this venue during the Second World War. It was also run at Newbury on one occasion in 1941.

Some of the greatest racehorses in the history of English flat racing have won the Coronation Cup. The roll of honour for the race includes two times winner, Triptych, a former 2,000 Guineas champion, and four times Ascot Gold Cup champion, Yeats, who won the race in 2005.
