The Volvo Masters

The Volvo Masters is the final official money event contested by the members of the European PGA Tour every year. The tournament is the European equivalent of the PGA’s Tour Championship, and as such is one of the most important events of the year.

The Volvo Masters is traditionally hosted in the Andalusian region of Spain at the Valderrama Golf Club. The tournament is a restricted field event, featuring the top 60 money earners on the European PGA Tour for the relevant season. The Volvo Masters offers a purse of €4,000,000, one of the highest available on the tour.

Volvo Masters History

The Volvo Masters is the European PGA Tour’s flagship event, and has been around since the tour entered the modern era in 1988. The inaugural Volvo Masters was hosted at what is recognised as the finest golf course in Europe, the Valderrama Golf Club.

Between 1997 and 2001 the Volvo Masters briefly moved to Montecastillo Golf Course, another premium venue in Spain. However, tournament organisers decided to return the event to its spiritual home in 2002.

The tournament was originally scheduled to take place a week prior to the PGA Tour Championship to allow golfers to participate in both events, but the clash of schedules was defused when the PGA moved their Championship to September.

Volvo Masters Betting

As one of the premier events on the European PGA Tour the Volvo Masters is well received by European bookmakers. Various betting specials and betting markets are open just prior to, as well as during the event, allowing punters to exploit all the great betting opportunities that top-level golf has to offer.

Punters placing bets on the European Open may want to explore handicap betting markets. By betting on handicaps, golf fans can not only capitalise on good odds, but also back a wider selection of players for victory than is possible in traditional outright winner betting markets.

Volvo Masters Winners

Only two players in the history of the Volvo Masters have managed to win the event more than once. Germany’s Bernhard Langer and Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie both have two Volvo Masters winners titles to their credit. The second title claimed by both golfers was a shared win at the 2002 Volvo Masters when they agreed to share the title after bad light ended their title play-off.
