The Scottish Open

The 6th green at the Scottish OpenThe Scottish Open, sponsored by Barclay’s Bank, is the most prestigious regular season event on the European PGA Tour. The tournament offers the highest prize money of any European PGA Tour event with a purse £3 million.

The Scottish Open is currently hosted by the Loch Lomond Golf Club, near the city of Glasgow. The tournament takes place during the week prior to the Open Championship, but rarely features the talents of players from the North American PGA Tour.

The choice of venue for the Scottish Open has caused some controversy in recent years, as the links course on which the Scottish Open is played is very different from the one that hosts the Open Championship. By contrast members of the PGA Tour prepare for the Open Championship on suitable links courses in Ireland, giving them a distinct advantage over their European opponents going into the British Open.

Scottish Open History

The Scottish Open was first held in 1972 at the Downfield Golf Club in Dundee. In the following year the Scottish Open moved to the famous links at St. Andrews Golf Course. After the second tournament, the Scottish Open was abandoned for 12 years.

In 1986 Bells Whisky resurrected the Scottish Open, beefed up the prize fund and established it as an annual event on the European Tour. The tournament was nomadic for many years, moving around the best links in Scotland before settling at the Loch Lomond Golf Club.

After a decade long association with the Loch Lomond Golf Club the Scottish Open is likely to move to Dundonald Golf Course during the next five years, to ensure that members of the European PGA Tour can prepare for the Open Championship on a suitable course.

Scottish Open Betting

As the most important event on the European PGA Tour the Scottish Open receives special attention from online bookmakers in the United Kingdom. Not only can fans benefit from a comprehensive selection of betting markets for the tournament, but will also have access to free bets and betting specials during the course of the event.

European PGA Tour events tend to be open affairs, with tournaments far harder to call than events on the North American PGA Tour. This makes placing money in outright betting markets quite risky, however, punters can benefit from long-odds payouts if the recent trend in low-ranked golfers winning the tournament continues.

Scottish Open Winners

Few players have managed to dominate the Scottish Open for any period of time. Only Ernie Els and Ian Woosnam have managed to win more than one Scottish Open title, with Woosnam holding the tournament record of three Scottish Open winners titles.
