The Irish Open is the only European PGA Tour golf tournament held in Ireland. The event is one of the most important and prestigious fixtures on the European Tour and is scheduled for May, traditionally in the week prior to the BMW PGA Championship.
The Irish Open is presently played at the Adare Golf Club in Limerick, Ireland. The event draws strong fields, with golfers viewing the event as an important warm-up for the BMW PGA Championship. The Irish Open offers a purse of €2.5 million, with the winner also earning sufficient merit points to qualify for a selection of World Golf Championship events.
Irish Open History
The Irish Open is the third oldest National Championship in Europe. The inaugural event was played at the Portmarnock Links North of Dublin in 1927, and drew a selection of the finest golfers in the United Kingdom.
The Irish Open continued until 1950, and was regarded as an event of similar importance to the Open Championships. However, financial difficulties plagued the tournament during the 1940s, and it was eventually canceled. The tournament was played only one more time in 1953 before going into dormancy for the next two decades.
In 1975 the tournament was resurrected by Murphy’s Stout, who nurtured the tournament for over 20 years, until it was firmly re-established as the most prestigious golf tournament in the Emerald Isles. The event started attracting strong fields during this period, and was played at a selection of the finest golf courses in Ireland.
Irish Open Betting
As a major highlight on the European PGA Tour the Irish Open attracts extensive coverage from online bookmakers, and punters can look forward to investing in a wide range of betting markets during the tournament.
While ante-post Irish Open betting markets are unlikely to run far in advance of the tournament, punters can look forward to some great odds on some of Europe’s top players. Punters should also look out for betting specials put up by Paddy Power, as the Irish bookies celebrate their country’s biggest golf event.
