The European Open is one of the biggest events on the European PGA Tour, drawing the strongest players and offering a significant prize fund of over £2.4. The tournament is played in July at the peak of the European golf season.
The European Open has been played at a number of top British golf courses during its history. At present the event is being hosted by the Heritage Course at the London Golf Club in Kent, a venue designed by golfing legend Arnold Palmer.
European Open History
The first European Open was played in 1978, when an American golfer called Boddy Wadkins became the first European Open champion. The tournament remained nomadic during its early years, with a number of top golf clubs in Britain given the opportunity to host the event.
It took well over a decade for the European Open to establish itself as a leading event on the European PGA Tour. By the mid 1990s, top golfers were routinely participating in the tournament, and some of the top names in European golf claimed the title.
The event was restricted to English courses for much of its history, and was played in Scotland once only, in 1979. From 1995 to 2007 the event was held at the K-Club in Ireland, before the decision was made to move the event to the London Golf Club.
European Open Betting
As an important domestic tournament, the European Open is covered by the majority of bookmakers in the United Kingdom. While specials and free bet offers are a rarity, punters still have access to all the more popular golf betting options.
Backing one of the top names in European golf in the European Open outright winner betting markets is never a bad idea when making selections for the tournament. Outright winner betting markets allow punters to cash in on higher odds, in a tournament which few players have managed to dominate for any length of time.
European Open Winners
Swedish golfer Per-Ulrich Johansson and England’s Lee Westwood hold the record for most wins in the European Open, with each golfer taking two titles apiece at the tournament. Both golfers also achieved this feat in successive years. A number of golfing legends have claimed titles at the European Open, including Ian Woosnam, Greg Norman and Nick Faldo.
