The Dubai Desert Classic

The prestigious Dubai Desert Classic is the first PGA tournament to be organised in the Middle East. The tournament forms part of the European PGA Tour order of merit, and is one of the first tournaments contested by the world’s top players every year. $2.5 million in prize money is up for grabs at the event.

The Dubai Desert Classic is played on the Majlis course at the Emirates Golf Club in the United Arab Emirates. The tournament is one of the few on the European PGA Tour that routinely features some of the biggest names from the PGA Tour, with the stars of North American golf paid hefty attendance fees to participate in the event.

Dubai Desert Classic History

The Dubai Desert Classic was played for the first time in 1989 as the Karl Litten Desert Classic. Emirates airlines took over the sponsorship of the tournament the following year, when Eamonn Darcy became the second winner of the tournament.

Over the next decade the Dubai Desert Classic began drawing in the biggest names in European golf, with top golfers including Seve Ballesteros, Ernie Els and Fred Couples winning the tournament. From 1999 to 2000 the event was moved to the Dubai Creek Golf Club before moving back to the Emirates Golf Club.
