International Rules Series

International Rules Series - Gaelic Football InternationalThe International Rules Series is an international sports series played annually by Ireland and Australia. The two match series, played in October, was developed to give Gaelic Football players and Australian Rules players the opportunity to represent their nations in an international tournament. A hybrid version of the two football codes is used during the International Rules Series.

The International Rules Series has proven to be a huge hit in both Ireland and Australia. The matches for the annual series are generally sell-outs, and the 2008 edition of the tournament sold over 80 000 tickets for each match. The International Rules Series is recognised as being one of the most physical tournaments in any football code, and was almost suspended indefinitely after an Irish player was knocked unconscious in one of the matches played during the 2006 series.

International Rules Series Betting

The International Rules Series is extremely popular in both Ireland and Australia. Each series receives significant coverage from bookmakers in the United Kingdom and Ireland, with Irish bookmakers like Paddy Power and Boylesports offering excellent money-back and free bet specials for the series.

One of the attractions of International Series Rules betting is the diversity of betting markets on offer for each match, which enables punters to put their expertise to use for virtually any aspect of game. The series is covered by live betting markets, and antepost markets are open year-round.

International Rules Series History

The International Rules Series has its origins in a 1967 tour, for which an Australian representative team travelled to Ireland to play the Irish Gaelic football champions, County Meath. For decades thereafter, Australian sides went on a series of informal tours to play Gaelic Football clubs in Ireland, and Gaelic clubs in turn toured Australia.

It was only in 1990 that the first test match was organised between representative teams from both countries. Early test matches received a lukewarm reception from both Irish and Australian fans, and it was only with the introduction of the International Rules Series in 1998 that the competition caught the public imagination.

During its short history the International Rules Series has proven to be extremely competitive, with neither side able to establish a sustained period of dominance, and Australia and Ireland currently stand neck and neck in terms of tournament titles won.
