The Copa America is the biggest regional football tournament in Latin America. Featuring the nations of one of FIFA’s most powerful and influential regions, the Copa America is recognised as the third biggest football tournament in the world.
As the only regional championship which does not require participants to qualify, the Copa America tournament comprises only the 10 member countries of CONMEBOL. This means two additional teams from neighbouring regions must be invited to each Copa America to bring the tournament up to full strength.
In 2011 the Copa America will take place in Argentina, with the 10 CONMEBOL nations and two invitational teams battling it out to claim the title of champions of South America. The 2011 Copa America will mark the 9th occasion on which the finals will have been held in Argentina.

Copa America Winners
Uruguay and Argentina have dominated the Copa America since its inception in 1916, claiming two thirds of all the Copa America titles to date, with 14 titles apiece. Brazil has been the third most successful team in the tournament, with 8 titles.
The remaining 4 Copa Copa America winners share 6 titles between them. Paraguay and Columbia have both claimed the Copa America winners title twice, while Columbia and Bolivia have one Copa America title each.
Copa America History
With the inaugural South American championship dating back to 1916, when Uruguay claimed the first Copa America title, the Copa America is the oldest regional football tournament in the world.
The Copa America was disrupted only once during its history, with no tournaments scheduled between 1967 and 1975, partially due to political upheaval in the region, as well as problems with the scheduling and hosting of the tournament. The Copa America was originally held every two years, before being changed to a four year cycle in 1975.
During its history the Copa America has proved itself to be one of the most competitive regional tournaments in world football, with 7 of the 10 CONMEBOL member nations winning the tournament since it was launched in 1916.
