Although Africa in general lacks the quality football infrastructure and playing facilities of the more developed nations, the African Cup of Nations is renowned for producing quality football. Many of the players in the tournament come from the richest European leagues, where they represent some of the sport’s biggest clubs.

In 2010 the African Cup of Nations will head for Angola, where 16 African teams will contest the tournament across four host cities. Qualification for the tournament will be tough, with dozens of teams competing for the privilege of appearing in the continent’s biggest football spectacle.

African Cup of Nations History

The first African Cup of Nations was held in 1957. The tournament was planned and launched during the same period that saw the formation of FIFA’s African Confederation of Football, and was held one year before the first European Championship was held in France.

For the first decade of its history the African Cup of Nations was a relatively small event, comprising only 4 teams in a short competition. By the early 1970s the tournament had expanded to eight teams, and began to attract television coverage.

However, it was only in 1992 that the African Cup of Nations reached maturity. That year’s tournament was expanded to 12 teams, and featured a South African side for the first time in the event’s history. The tournament was expanded to its present size of 16 teams in 1996 when South Africa hosted, and won, its first African Cup of Nations.
