The Portuguese Liga is the highest level professional club football tournament in Portugal. Whilst the league doesn’t enjoy the high levels of global interest displayed in the Premiership and La Liga, it nevertheless attracts strong support from Portuguese expatriate communities around the world.
A total of 16 clubs participate in the Portuguese Liga. The league follows a round robin format, with each club playing the others in the league home and away during the course of a season.
The two lowest placed clubs in the league are relegated at the conclusion of the season, and the top two clubs qualify for the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.
Portuguese Liga Betting
The Portuguese Liga receives extensive coverage from sportsbooks in the United Kingdom and Europe, with a wide variety of betting markets being made available for each Liga match. Portuguese Liga matches are also covered in live betting markets by UK bookmakers.
Outright betting markets for the Portuguese Liga, though readily available, don’t always offer the highest value due to the dominance of the league by FC Porto. Many punters betting on the Portuguese Liga make use of odds comparison services to access the best prices on their outright winner selections.
Portuguese Liga History
The Portuguese Liga is amongst the oldest football leagues in Europe. The tournament can trace its roots back to the early 20th century, when Portuguese clubs contested the Primeira Liga.
Despite the existence of a nationwide league, it was the country’s knockout club that dominated Portuguese football and was used to measure the quality and success of competing clubs.
In 1938 the Primeira Divisão was introduced in Portugal as the county’s highest level football tournament. The league adopted the round-robin format used to this day, and bar changes to the name of the tournament and the number of participating clubs, it has remained unchanged.
During its history three clubs have dominated the Portuguese Liga. Benfica, Porto and Sporting CP have claimed all but two league titles since the inception of the Portuguese Liga. These sides have also performed well in Europe, with Portuguese Clubs having won both the European Cup and UEFA Cup.
