The Liga de Futbol Profesional is the highest level football league in Spain. Commonly referred to as ‘La Liga’, the Spanish first division league is rated by UEFA as the second most powerful in Europe, and boasts the third highest annual attendance figures for any league in the region.
The La Liga features 20 Spanish clubs participating in a round robin, home and away tournament. The lowest ranked clubs are relegated to the second division at the end of the season, while the clubs finishing at the top of the table qualify for places in the UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League.
Football fans looking to place bets on La Liga matches will rarely have difficulty in accessing La Liga betting markets. All Spanish league games are covered by bookmakers in the UK, although betting coverage is somewhat lower in comparison to that offered for UK football.
While UK bookmakers will rarely offer free bets specials for LA Liga games, punters should look out for money back specials offered on matches between the most popular Spanish sides. Ante-post betting on the league winner is also available from the majority of UK sportsbooks during the off-season.
Jose Maria Acha, director of the Arenas Club de Getxo, proposed the formation of a Spanish national football league in 1927. The league was created with the intention of ensuring regular competition for the ten largest and best supported Spanish clubs.
The league was an instant success, and aside from a brief suspension of the tournament during the Spanish Civil War, continued to expand steadily, assimilating football clubs from around the country. During the 1950s and 1960s, the launch of European leagues boosted the profile of La Liga and won it new fans as Spanish clubs excelled on the European stage.
The Spanish first division has been dominated by two clubs since its inception in 1927. Barcelona and Real Madrid, both founding members of the league, have claimed 49 La Liga titles between them since 1928. Matches between these two clubs are highlights of the La Liga season, and draw some of the biggest crowds in world football.
Only seven other Spanish clubs have claimed the La Liga title, with Atletico Bilbao, Deportivo La Coruna, Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Sevilla and Real Betis sharing 28 La Liga winners’ titles between them. Atletico Bilbao is the only one of these clubs never to have been relegated from the first division.
