The 2nd Bundesliga is the second tier professional football league in Germany. Contested since 1974, the 2nd Bundesliga is home to 18 German clubs hoping to qualify for the 1st division by competing in a round robin home and away league tournament.
The top two teams in the 2nd Bundesliga qualify automatically for the Bundesliga in the following season. The 3rd placed club competes in a playoff with the 16th placed club in the Bundesliga, in an annual promotion-relegation battle.
The 2nd Bundesliga places strong emphasis on nurturing homegrown talent, with each club allowed to field a maximum of 5 players from outside the European Union.
