The Bundesliga is the highest division of football in Germany. The league is the best-attended football league in the world, and the fourth best-attended domestic league in world sport. The quality of participating clubs also makes the Bundesliga one of the three most highly rated football leagues in Europe.
The 18 clubs participating in the Bundesliga play in a round robin, home and away tournament. The top two teams in the league qualify automatically for the Champions League, while the two clubs at the bottom are relegated to the 2 Bundesliga.
As one of the most popular sports leagues in the world, the Bundesliga attracts extensive coverage from sportsbooks, with continental bookmakers like Bwin offering a wide variety of fixed odds and live betting markets for all Bundesliga fixtures.
Bookmakers in the UK always cover Bundesliga matches in their football coupons, however, the depth of coverage is variable with the best betting opportunities to be found at sites specialising in live betting. While Bundesliga betting specials are not abundant, the best bookmakers do offer money back specials for high profile matches.
Although the winners of various German regional championships have been contesting a national championship since 1900, it was only in 1962 that a central league was considered as a response to a series of poor performances by the German national team, and the departure of the country’s best players to foreign leagues.
At the time that the Bundesliga was created, there were five separate leagues organised throughout Germany. The founding of a central league resulted in 16 clubs being selected from 48 applicants, with first division clubs selected on the basis of support levels and financial resources.
The first Bundesliga was contested in 1963 when FC Köln took the inaugural Bundesliga title.
Bayern Munich is the most successful club in the history of the Bundesliga, having claimed 21 titles since the formation of the German first division. Borussia Mönchengladbach is the second most successful Bundesliga club with 5 titles, followed by Werder Bremen with four Bundesliga winners’ titles.
All Bundesliga champions are awarded the Verdiente Meistervereine, a golden star displayed on the team kit. Additional stars are awarded to clubs every time they win ten regional or domestic championship titles. Bayern Munich currently leads the star count with four Verdiente Meistervereine patches.
