Ligue 2 is the second division of France’s professional football league, and the only other fully professional league in the country besides the first division. Founded in 1933, Ligue 2 comprises 20 French football clubs, each participating in 38 home and away matches against the other league members.
The top three clubs at the conclusion of the Ligue 2 season secure automatic qualification for Ligue 1, while the three lowest ranked Ligue 2 clubs are relegated to the semi-professional Championnat National.
As one of the lower profile European second division leagues, finding Ligue 2 betting markets can be quite a challenge, with UK sportsbooks giving preference to bigger leagues. However, punters looking to bet on the Ligue 2 can still find betting markets if they are prepared to shop around, with the likes of Bwin offering coverage of many Ligue 2 games.
Some of France’s most famous football clubs have participated in, and won, the Ligue 2 championship. Nice is one of the most successful clubs in the history of the league, having claimed the title and promotion to Ligue 1 four times. St Etienne has been the most outstanding club in the league in recent years, winning two Ligue 2 winners’ titles during the past decade.
