The FIA League of Ireland is the latest incarnation of the League of Ireland. The FIA League of Ireland is the Republic of Ireland’s highest level professional football league, and was created by merging the Football League of Ireland with other competitions organised by the Football Association of Ireland.
The merger resulted in a 22 club league. In practice the FIA League of Ireland is split into two divisions, a 10 club Premier Division and a 12 club First Division. Premier Division clubs play one another three times during each season, and the balance of home and away fixtures between each club is decided upon in a pre-season draw.
One club is automatically relegated from the Premier Division at the conclusion of each season, whilst the 8th and 9th placed clubs are required to play a series of playoff matches to retain their places in the league.
The league champions qualify for the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League, and the club placed in second position receives entry into the Europa League qualifying rounds.

FIA League of Ireland History
The League of Ireland was first played in 1921, and was originally little more than a championship for clubs based in the city of Dublin.
From the outset the League of Ireland suffered in terms of popularity in comparison to the English and Scottish Leagues, as many Irish football supporters chose to support clubs in these leagues, such as Scotland-based Celtic, in preference to the Irish League.
The presence of two of Europe’s strongest leagues on its doorstep resulted in relatively low attendances for League of Ireland matches, and even the national broadcaster rarely broadcast matches live on television.
In the late 1990s the League of Ireland moved towards full professionalism, improving both the quality of club performances and levels of public interest. The league underwent restructuring in 2006 to ensure that the tournament would be effectively promoted and financially sustainable.
