Twenty20 Champions League History
The lack of interest in domestic cricket leagues has been of major concern to the ICC during recent years, especially since so few countries are able to support fully professional domestic leagues. The weakness of these leagues also resulted in a top heavy structure, where international cricket is the focal point of fan interest and domestic leagues struggle to attract crowds and broadcasting deals.
The weakness of domestic cricket in some of the test playing nations led to the first calls for a regional competition along the lines of the UEFA Champions League and Super 14. In response to this requirement a champions’ league was initially proposed as a possible solution by the chairman of the Indian cricket board in 1996. However, undeveloped organisational structures and logistical problems resulted in these plans being put on a backburner.
The transformation of cricket in recent years by Twenty20 Cricket allowed the plans for a regional tournament to be dusted off, as Twenty20 Cricket changed many domestic leagues into viable commercial entities. In addition, the opportunity given to domestic players to participate in international matches was seen as likely to significantly improve the quality and strength of both domestic and international cricket.
