Cricket World Cup History

The Cricket World Cup was conceived and organized shortly after one day cricket was introduced in the United Kingdom, with the first world cup hosted by England in 1975. Eight teams participated in a round robin tournament, and the West Indies emerged as the first world champions.

By 1992 the Cricket World Cup had introduced several changes. Games had been shortened from 60 to 50 over innings, and players traded in their whites for brightly coloured kits. The 1992 world cup featured the South African team for the first time, and was won by Imran Khan’s Pakistan.

In recent years the Cricket World Cup has grown and changed significantly. Additional teams have been added to the tournament and numerous format changes introduced. The introduction of 16 teams for the 2007 tournament resulted in the extension of its reach into developing cricketing nations.

Cricket World Cup Winners

Six of the ten test playing countries have won the Cricket World Cup in half of a century of competition. Australia holds the record for most wins in the tournament, achieving a hat trick of Cricket World Cup winners titles between 1999 and 2007. The West Indies is the only other team to have captured more than one Cricket World Cup title, by winning the first two tournaments.
