It’s the reality show that got Tony talking to the Commoners and Paris Hilton hinting madly for a spot in the sun, but it is also a reality show with an unattractive bite! Celebrity Big Brother may have its heart in the right place but it has also stooped to new lows for the sake of entertainment!
As with Big Brother, a number of top International celebrities are invited into the ‘House’, and the last remaining house mate, who has managed to avoid eviction by pubic vote, wins. Each celebrity is handsomely paid for their appearance on the show on condition they do not leave the ‘House’ voluntarily. This time, though, all the lovely lolly is donated to charity – fab idea, maybe, but things all went a tad awry in the latest edition of Celebrity Big Brother, aired on Channel 4 in 2007!
The Shetty Scandal
One of the house mates, Indian actress and animal activist, Shilpa Shetty, was allegedly bullied and racially abused by some of the other ‘ladies’ of the ’House’ but whether this was a carefully worked out strategy to increase the falling ratings, or a genuine racial incident, we will probably never know. Whatever the motivation, the behaviour in the House prompted over 44 000 complaints to UK’s media Watchdog, Ofcom and a full investigation by the British police!
Celebrity Big Brother couldn’t have wished for better publicity than the public outcry over Shilpa’s treatment and when Tony Blair mentioned the racial incident during an address to Parliament, the show had arguably come of age, but at what cost?
One of the major sponsors of the show, Carphone Warehouse, withdrew its sponsorship due to the ongoing negative publicity of the attack on the Bollywood actress and for all intents and purposes the show has effectively been axed from British TV.
Paris Hilton wants in!
One of America’s top celebs, the mischievous Paris Hilton, has indicated she would love to be a House Mate should there be a next edition but wants at least a seven-figure pay packet! The organisers can be assured, though, with Paris in the pack, the ambience in the ‘House’ is sure to heat up.
With the latest fracas over Celebrity Big Brother, Channel 4 has indicated they have put the show on the back-burner for the meantime for a cooling off period but whether they ever launch the series again is debatable.
