Who’s Going to Avoid the Chop?

We’re well into Season nine of Big Brother, the reality show with a sting in the tail, and as can be expected house mates are trashing each other, the House and anything else they can get their hands onto in a bid to stave of that creeping paranoia that lurks in the House.

Punters have until September to pick a winner

Punters have until September to pick out the last remaining mate and bookmakers are currently posting favourable odds on some of the more tempestuous types but it’s going be tricky to pick a winner!

Big Brother was the smart idea of Dutch media mogul, John de Mol and his production house, and was piloted in Holland for the first time in 1999. Based on the Orwellian character ‘Big Brother’, the all-seeing, control freak from his book ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’, the program, in its early days of broadcast, could well have been mistaken for a hare-brained experiment by a nutty professor and even B F Skinner, the great behavioural psychologist, would have been proud with the research methodology undertaken by the producers to create a genuinely taxing environment for the contestants!

The quick low down is: a number of contestants are thrown together in a controlled environment where their every move, sound and gesture is recorded by both microphones and cameras scattered throughout the shared territory and broadcast live as the reality show. They are forbidden any communication whatsoever from the outside and privately nominate housemates they want to evict. Housemates are then eliminated from the show by public vote and the last mate gets all the moola!

Season Nine Controversies up the Ratings

The obvious tensions and antagonisms between the house mates is great entertainment as the television ratings throughout the world have shown and this season of Big Brother is no exception:

  • UK media watchdog, The Office of Communications (Ofcom), together with Channel 4, received over 400 complaints regarding alleged bullying by one of the mates
  • Live feed had to be cut when tempers flared, profanities were swopped and face spitting occurred

But, that’s pretty tame compared to some of the other feed from countries around the globe – explicit sex is often an added bit of excitement for both the mates and the viewers and there have been plenty of head-butting incidents particularly among the male inmates – life’s never boring in Big Brother land!

One of the UK’s finest bookmakers, William Hill, is currently offering odds on the outright winner, the top male and female and the gender of the winner, so keep glued to your telly and get those bets down, quick – Big Brother’s Watching You!
