Marat Safin was the surprise ‘Demolition Man’ on Centre Court yesterday when he sent third seed, Novak Djokovic, packing in a day Serbian supporters would rather forget. With the shock demise of one of the players tipped to dethrone the King, the Championship is effectively a different ball game now for the two frontrunners - Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
One Less Nemesis for Roger!
The former Russian number one, Safin, dismembered Djokovic with ease in three straight sets and played some of the best grass court tennis of his life. Since his maiden grand slam win in Melbourne, Djokovic has been a top contender for the grass court title - he has often made no bones of the fact he fancies the surface, whereas second seed, Nadal, is quite clearly more destructive on clay.
Roger Federer will be thrilled he will not have to face his Nemesis at the All England Club and all things being equal, he should be able to tame Raffa on his preferred surface. He has lifted his game tremendously since his humiliating defeat in Paris.
Could we see Safin and Safina as Champions?
But what of Safin? We all know what he is capable of and he and his sister, Dinara Safina, are certainly reaching peak form going into the latter rounds of Wimbledon. could we witness a Safin/Safina monopoly of the Championship?
