It should be a stroll in the park for Scotland’s Andy Murray when he opens his account at the All England Club today against Frenchman, Fabrice Santoro. The three-times doubles grand slam champion is currently ranked a lowly 54 on the ATP singles ranking and his best result at Wimbledon was in 2001 when he reached the third round.
Masterful Murray
The two have only met once before and that was in last year’s Masters Series in Paris. Murray pulled off a convincing two set victory over the popular Santoro and all indications are that the 12th seed will do it again in style. Murray had to pull out of the grass court warm-up event at Eastbourne early due to a thumb injury, but has since recovered and was most impressive at a recent exhibition match against Janko Tipsarevic.
Can he break the Duck at the All England Club?
All eyes will be on Murray to perform well at his ‘home’ ground and he will be champing at the bit to improve on his 2006 fourth round departure from Wimbledon. Murray has a reasonable career record on grass - his win/loss stands at 14/7, so there is really no excuse for him not to make it through to the second round. Irish bookmaker, Paddy Power, has Murray 1-12 and Fabrice Santoro 11-2 to go through to the next round.
