Tournament of ‘Minnows’ - Wimbledon 2008 Ladies’ Quarterfinals

Wimbledon 2008 will arguably be remembered as the tournament of ‘Minnows’ - rank amateurs and some of the forgotten souls of international tennis are slowly but surely making their way to the winner’s podium, much to the surprise and chagrin of the top ranked tennis players on both the WTA and ATP rankings.

Record Demise of the Top Seeds
The shock dismissal of the top four seeds in the ladies’ competition - a feat that has never happened in the history of Wimbledon - has left the Championships wide open and the bookmakers must be pondering the outcome of the event with some trepidation!

Who would have thought the ladies’ quarterfinals would be contested by Serena and Venus Williams, who have not necessarily set the world alight in the past couple of years with their stutterng game play and injury woes, and a veritable ‘posse’ of lesser known stars including unseeded Tamarine Tanasugarin of Thailand and Jie Zheng of China!

The men’s event has also witnessed some startling results - what of the unprecedented rise of Marat Safin - a man many thought should be hanging up his racket, not contesting a grand slam - and the mercurial ascent of the injury plagued Mario Ancic and Rainer Schuettler. Fans will be delighted with the onging presence of two of the superstars of the ATP though, the unequivocal emperor of grass, Roger Federer and his number two, the incorrigible ‘Raffa’ Nadal!
