Murray favoured by Britain’s bookmakers

The most exciting tennis player to emerge out of Britain for quite some time, Scotland’s Andrew Murray, has been favourably backed as the 2009 Australian open men’s singles champion by the vast majority of bookmakers – in his country in any event.

Murray is red hot at the moment after fatally searing the incumbent numbers one and two of world tennis, Nadal and Federer, at the beginning of the season, a season that is still only in its opening month!

The controversial Scot has improved in leaps and bounds in recent times and looks to be the complete article. He has shown that he has a formidable array of weapons in his armoury but what is more impressive about the young man is his cool and calm demeanour on court, something that he didn’t quite manage earlier on in his career.

Many detractors have doubted his commitment to his chosen career but with a change of personnel at the beginning of 2008 and his hard work in the gym to improve his fitness levels, thought by many to be his Achilles heel, Murray is now going to be a very difficult man to beat on the day.

Murray opens his account in Melbourne tomorrow against relative unknown, Andrei Pavel from Romania. Pavel is ranked 1141 on the ATP rankings and the only time the two have met was at the 2005 Us Open when Murray won in five sets.

William Hill has a number of bets on the match between Murray and Pavel including first set betting, total match games and handicap betting. Current odds on the match are Murray 1/50 and Pavel 12/1.
