Andy Murray meets Rafael Nadal in the first true strength vs. strength match in the 2010 Australian Open men’s draw on Tuesday.
The press is already talking up Murray’s chances of winning his first grand slam title in Melbourne this weekend, however, the Scot will need to reverse a poor record against Nadal to put himself in contention for a place in the 2010 Australian Open final.
Andy Murray vs. Rafael Nadal Trends Analysis
Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal have played one another on 9 occasions in the past. Rafael Nadal has tended to dominate these encounters taking 7 wins to Murray’s 2.
6 of these matches were played on hard courts, with the score on this surface reading 4-2 in Nadal’s favour. Only 3 matches between these two players have gone to the maximum number of sets, with two of these played on hard courts.
The two players have not met since Nadal’s tendinitis-enforced absence from the sport which has resulted in a major loss of form for the Spaniard.
Nadal has shown sound form during the course of the 2010 Australian Open against decent opponents. The Spaniard won his first two matches of the tournament in straight sets, then required four sets to put away Phillip Kohlschreiber and Ivo Karlovic in the 3rd and 4th round respectively.
Given his tough draw, Nadal has performed admirably, but still appears to be some way off the form that won him the Australian Open title in 2009, and is yet to find his rhythm in the tournament.
Andy Murray, by contrast, has cruised through the Australian Open. The Scot is yet to drop a set at the tournament, and has done well against modest opponents like John Isner, Florent Serra and Marc Giquel.
Andy Murray vs. Rafael Nadal Betting Tip
Many bookmakers are pricing Murray as the favourite for this match, with the Scot best priced at 5/6 by Boylesports. Nadal is trading above evens with Boylesports also top pricing the Spaniard at 11/10.
Pricing runs counter to the seeding of both these players as well as their record on hard courts – which suggests that Murray has a 1 in 3 chance of beating Nadal. Murray’s from has been slightly better than Nadal’s in Melbourne this year, yet the Scot has a tendency to choke in pressure matches and we’re expecting a very determined performance from Nadal.
We’re therefore going to take on Murray’s low odds and lay him at an exchange. We’re also going to place bets on the set betting market, where there are some excellent odds on offer.
We’ll place a spread of bets on this market, betting on both Nadal and Murray to win the match 3-2 at odds of 5/1 at Bet365.
