The first grand slam tournament of the season gets underway on Monday the 18th of January as the world’s finest tennis players brave the sweltering heat of Melbourne to compete in the 2010 Australian Open.

The tournament promises to be a captivating event, with both the men’s and women’s draws looking very open and competitive and the tournament setting the stage for the eagerly anticipated comeback of former world number one, Justine Henin.

Men’s Draw

The men’s draw at the 2010 Australian Open looks set to be more open and competitive than it has been in years. Rafael Nadal will enter the tournament as defending champion, but with serious questions lingering over his form following his return to the game from tendinitis.

Roger Federer is the bookies favourite to win the tournament at odds of 11/4, yet his form has dipped significantly since he claimed the Wimbledon title in July of 2009.

Instead it looks like a lower ranked player may have the opportunity to claim a grand slam breakthrough in 2010. Juan Martin del Potro is an obvious candidate, yet is slow to build form at the start of the season. Andy Murray remains the big hope for the British public, but tends to choke at the big events, while Novak Djokovic still doesn’t seem to have come to terms with his new racket.

That leaves Nikolay Davydenko as an interesting prospect, given that he beat Nadal to take the Qatar Open title in January and took both the Shanghai Masters and ATP World Championships at the end of 2009.

At 10/1 at Canbet, Davydenko is likely to be a popular each-way bet with tennis fans betting on the 2010 Australian Open. Davydenko aside, there are the likes of the fast-improving Robin Soderling and the ever-dangerous Andy Roddick in the potent men’s draw mix.

Women’s Draw

The women’s draw at the 2010 Australian Open also looks potentially explosive, and has the touches of class about it that have been missing in recent years.

Comeback kid Kim Clijsters is the favourite to take her second consecutive grand slam title on hard courts after defeating Justine Henin in the final of the Brisbane International in January. Henin’s performance during her own comeback will have delighted her fans and at 11/2 BlueSQ‘s price on the former world number one looks to be the bargain bet of the tournament.

As one might expect, the Williams sisters are also amongst the favourites for the tournament. Serena is priced amongst the top three favourites by bookmakers but last won a tournament at Wimbledon, while Venus looks to be too far past her prime to be a genuine threat in Melbourne.

Of course women’s tennis is far more unpredictable than the men’s game and we can expect upsets aplenty in Melbourne.

Likely candidates to inflict upsets would include Caroline Wozniacki, the determined Svetlana Kuznetsova and any one of the mercurial contingent of Russian players, including Maria Sharapova, Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina. With great odds on offer, there are fortunes to be made on successful outright bets on the women’s draw.
