‘Porky’ Proteas May Blood New Opener at Headingley

Well, the first test at Lord’s may have been a bitter disappointment for all those expecting action from South Africa’s much vaunted pace attack but let’s face it, it was a test of mammoth proportions for the visitors and, against all odds, they did manage to carve out a painfully slow but ever-patient draw.

The Proteas lacked their normal effervescence on the field and the bowling attack was ordinary to say the least and compared to the gritty English, they did look almost out of their depth for the initial three days.

What impressed with England’s bowlers, on the other hand, is they had an intelligent, well-worked plan for every single batsman that paid off 99% of the time - the dismissal of premier batsman, Jacques Kallis, in the first innings is a case in point.

Neil MacKenzie, one of four South African centurions at Lord’s who opens the batting with captain, Graeme Smith, is a doubtful starter for the second test tomorrow - he pulled a groin muscle late in the second innings and is battling to recover in time.

But, there is no need for panic in the Protea’s dressing room as Jean-Paul Duminy is tipped to take MacKenzie’s place and the young, in-form batsman is one of the treasures of the future for the Proteas. He successfully opened the bating in South Africa’s first tour match in Somerset, capturing an impressive half century in style and has often been favourably compared to one of the finest batsman in world cricket today, the incomparable Kallis.

With the long-awaited return of all-rounder, Andrew Flintoff, into England’s line-up, the second test at Headingley should prove to be quite riveting!
