The organisers of the Open Championship have chosen some real classic match-ups for the first two days of the tournament and fans can expect some fiery play from the big names of golf and the young ‘uns who will be trying their level best to claim the Claret Jug and the major title.
Defending champion, Padraig Harrington, will be in fine company at Royal Birkdale on Thursday, he will be joined at the tee box by two-time US Open champion, Retief Goosen and 1997 Open winner, Justin Leonard.
Watch out for Incredible Kaymer
But it is the Martin Kaymer, Ernie Els and Scott Verplank trio that may get the crowd up on their feet. Kaymer is one of the young men tipped as a future great and he has started his career in magnificent form. He is the only German honoured with the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award (2007), he stormed to an awesome 15 under win at the BMW International Open, outplaying the entire field and this year alone he boasts five top ten finishes - what a prospect for the future of golf.
The ‘Kim Factor’
Another group that will be scrutinised by both the media and the fans is the Soren Hansen, Trevor Immelman and Anthony Kim alliance. Kim is causing a furore across the Atlantic with his scintillating play and quite rightly so - he is one of a handful of players who has claimed multiple wins on the PGA Tour already this year, and pundits are comparing him to the legendary Tiger Woods. Immelman, of course, claimed his first major title this year, the Masters at Augusta, and he will be up for the challenge of Royal Birkdale!
