Arsenal are behaving like the idiot-savants of English football this season. The Gunners’ inner idiot came to the fore as they went down to the likes of Hull, Stoke and Burnley, while the savant took center stage in their brilliant wins over Manchester United and Chelsea.

Fans will be hoping that Arsene Wenger will be able to steady the Arsenal ship this weekend as the Gunners go into their Premier League fixture against Wigan Athletic at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal should win the match, but that of course means nothing when one is dealing with a side that recently contrived to lose a Carling Cup semi-final to a Championship club.

Can Wigan do it?
Wigan will be hoping that Arsenal continue their trend of playing well against the biggest teams in English football whilst producing utter rubbish in their confrontations with the teams on the lower levels of the Premier League table.

Wigan have proven themselves more than capable of punching above their weight this season, beating the likes of Liverpool and Portsmouth whilst also being responsible for the 5-0 hiding that put upstarts Hull City firmly in their place after a rousing Premiership debut.

Unlike Arsenal, Wigan will also go into the match on the back of a win in the Premieship, after accounting for West Bromwich Albion 2-1 on the weekend.

However, all is not love and roses at the JJB Stadium, with star Emile Heskey reportedly keen to depart the club and Senegalese striker Henri Camara putting pressure on Wigan to offer him a better deal. Only time will tell if these factors will affect Wigan’s focus and keep them out of the top half of the Premier League table.
