Spain must surely have silenced their detractors on Thursday night with an awesome display against their Russian counterparts, who they demolished with brutal intent for the second time in the championship. Luis Aragone’s team have reached the final in Vienna with twenty-one straight victories - quite exemplary for a team gunning for their first European Crown since 1964!
Poor Defence Could be the Achilles Heel for Germany
The one element the ‘La Roja’ can use to their best advantage is Germany’s poor defence which was particularly evident against the Turks on Wednesday and although the Spaniards will be without the services of one of their key attackers, David Villa, who was injured in the confrontation against Russia, it is not expected to affect their performance adversely. He was ably replaced by one of the stars of the semi-final, Cesc Fabregas, in the 35th minute.
Germany, on the other hand, has all the experience of three prior final clashes and although their performance against Turkey was admittedly rather shaky, they do have the mental capacity, vision and technique to claim their fourth championship title.
Pressure Could be Key
The Germans have displayed some great one-touch football and have shown they can be innovative in goal scoring, as was evident with Bastian Schweinsteiger’s goal against Portugal, so it will all boil down to which team has the technique to open up the defences and the ability to play under the searing pressure of the Euro 2008 final!
