2008 Tri Nations Betting Preview

South Africa vs. Australia - Ellis Park, Saturday 13:00 GMT

Australia head to one of South Africa’s most impregnable rugby fortresses this weekend to take on a Spingbok side bruised by a succession of poor performances. While the South Africans will be hoping that proud history of Springbok rugby at Ellis Park will combine with altitude to give them an edge in the game, common sense dictates that a largely unchanged side is unlikely to produce an improved performance.

PDV’s POV

Pieter de Villiers shows no signs of cracking in the face of tremendous pressure over South Africa’s disastrous performances at home, going so far as to assure the media: “Winning and losing are the same thing to me, it’s just that winning is much nicer.”
De Villiers has otherwise responded by dropping form forward Joe van Niekerk from the squad whilst holding on to the services of an out of sorts Pierre Spies. There are also enforced changes in the back-line where win JP Pietersen has been replaced by Odwa Ndungane.

With the Boks now set up with a pacey but distinctly flimsy backline, it’s hard to see how the golden tide of large, powerful Australian backs will be held off the South African try-line.
In fact there is little to suggest that South Africa will achieve anything other than defeat on Saturday. The most Springbok fans can hope for is that another loss will finally compel the South African Rugby Football Union to give De Villiers his overdue marching orders.

While the South African camp is in disarray the Australians are looking more confident and composed than ever, and with a settled starting XV and strong bench are unlikely to misfire this weekend.
