Ireland hosts Italy in the opening match of the 2010 Six Nations Championship at Croke Park on Saturday.
Italy is yet to defeat Ireland in the Six Nations Championship, and is unlikely to break its duck on Saturday as it takes on the reigning champions at their Dublin fortress.
While the Irish are boasting a squad packed with British and Irish Lions, Heineken Cup winners and most of the 2009 Six Nations title winning squad, the Italian cupboard continues to look bare, with Nick Mallet relying on aging, uninspiring or untested players.
Ireland has won all but one of its last five encounters against Italy by 11 points or more, and has handed the Italians some genuine hidings, winning last year’s match 38-9 in Rome.
Ireland is at very low odds for this match with most bookies offering 33/1 on the Irish win. Italy is trading at 39/1 at Betfair, while the draw is 89/1 at the same vendor.
We’re expecting Ireland to win by between 11 and 30 points and will take the 5/2 on offer for an Irish win by 11-20 points in the Alternative Winning Margin markets at Paddy Power as well as the 3/1 on offer for an Irish win in the 21-30 point margin in the same Six Nations betting market.
