2007 Scottish Open Results
Grégory Havret won the 2007 Scottish Open after defeating Phil Mickelson, then ranked as the world’s number three golfer, on the first hole of a playoff.
For Havret, whose only previous European Tour win came in 2001 with the Italian Open, the win was doubly sweet. As well as earning him prize money of $1,005,950, it secured him a place in the major British Open at Carnoustie, played the following Thursday.
Phil Mickelson began the final day of the 2007 Scottish Open with a one-stroke lead – a lead he managed to keep up to the 14th hole, when Havret scored a birdie and left their scores tied.
Mickelson went on to bogey three of the last five holes, although a birdie at the 15th hole and an impressive 30-foot birdie putt at the 17th hole saw him approach the final regulation hole with a recovered one-stroke lead. Mickelson said, “I really struggled off the tee and the back nine was a fight for me.”
At the final hole, Mickelson drove into thick rough along the side of the fairway and then needed a chip shot and two putts for bogey. Havret managed the final 18th in two from 15 feet, forcing a playoff that both players entered at 14-under 270.
In the playoff, Mickelson repeated his bogey on the 18th. His first shot drove the ball into reeds on the edge of the loch. After an impressive recovery shot onto the fairway, he hit the ball too hard, with a third shot taking the ball to the fringe at the back of the green and resulting in the bogey.
In the playoff hole, Havret managed to sink a six-footer for par – an up-and-down from a greenside bunker – to secure victory, before being doused with champagne by fellow Frenchman Thomas Levet.
“Greg played very solid golf and I played very erratic golf,” Mickelson said.
In the 2007 Scottish Open, Ernie Els (65) finished one shot back at 271, earning a third position in the championship after a 40-foot birdie on the final hole. It was his fourth straight birdie on the 18th hole.
Luke Donald (64), Richard Sterne (64), Pelle Edberg (66) and Louis Oosthuizen (68) tied for fourth position at 273.
