Prince of Wales’s Stakes Race Guide
The Prince Wales’s Stakes is the richest race run at the Royal Ascot meeting, offering a prize fund of £375,000. The race dates back to 1862 and was first run over a distance of 1 mile 5 furlongs, by 3-year old and older thoroughbreds.
For over two decades, during the period when the position of Prince of Wales was vacant, the Prince of Wales’s Stakes was absent from the Royal Ascot meeting. However, in order to mark the investiture of Prince Charles, the race was re-introduced to the Royal Ascot meeting in 1969.
At present the Prince of Wales Stakes is run over a distance of 1 mile 2 furlongs. The race attained Group One status in 2000, and is open only to 4-year old and older thoroughbreds.
Prince of Wales’s Stakes Betting
The Prince of Wales’s stakes is one of the easier Royal Ascot races to call. In recent years a clear trend has emerged in the race, with short-odds favourites consistently managing to win the race or finish placed. This means punters can safely scratch the long odds runners off their cards.
Unfortunately the Prince of Wales’s Stakes does not offer much in the way of ante-post betting opportunities, with most online sportsbooks only opening race markets a week prior to the Royal Ascot meeting. This makes pool betting a popular Prince of Wales’s Stakes betting option amongst many punters.
Prince of Wales’s Stakes Winners
