The Coronation Stakes is the most eagerly anticipated race of the 4th day of the annual Royal Ascot meeting. The race was first run in 1840 in honour of the coronation of Queen Victoria. It attained Group One status in 1988, along with the St. James’s Palace Stakes.
Today the Coronation Stakes is recognised as one of the most prestigious flat races for 3-year old fillies held in England. As a result the race draws a powerful field, including runners from the 1,000 Guineas and the Irish equivalent.
Run over a mile on Ascot racecourse, the Coronation Stakes requires a perfect blend of speed and stamina from runners. The elevation of the Coronation Stakes to Group One status has seen the prize fund increase significantly, with the race presently boasting a purse of £250,000.
Coronation Stakes Betting
The Coronation Stakes is an obvious betting highlight of the Royal Ascot meeting. Punters betting on the race can refer to early season form amongst 3-year old fillies when betting on the race, with many looking out for runners that participated in the Guineas races.
Ante-post Coronation Stakes betting markets mostly tend to open during the week of the actual Royal Ascot meeting. This gives punters a relatively limited time frame in which to read the behaviour of the betting markets and take advantage of the highest race odds.
Unless the Coronation Stakes produces a very strong market favourite, bets on this race can be quite tricky. The runners are young and inexperienced, with many capable of springing surprises, something demonstrated by the fact that no trainer has yet managed to assert dominance in this race.
Coronation Stakes Winners
The Coronation Stakes is as difficult for trainers to win as it is for punters to call. Over the past decade only Sir Michael Stoute has managed to train two Coronation Stakes winners, with no other trainer taking more than one Coronation Stakes title since 1999.
The same can be said of the jockeys riding the Coronation Stakes winners. Since 1993 the winner of the Coronation Stakes has been ridden by a different jockey every year, with Walter Swinburn the last jockey to claim back-to-back victories in 1986 and 1987.
