The Royal Hunt Cup

The Royal Hunt Cup is a listed heritage handicap thoroughbred race run at the annual Royal Ascot meeting in June. The Royal Hunt Cup is raced over a distance of one mile on Ascot racecourse and is open to 3 year old and older thoroughbred racehorses.

The Royal Hunt Cup is one of only three trophies at the Royal Ascot meeting awarded personally by the Queen of England. It is also unique in that the trophy is re cast every year, allowing each year’s winner to retain ownership of their trophy.

Royal Hunt Cup History and Winners

The Royal Hunt Cup was first raced in 1834, and has been run over several different distances during its history. Originally a shorter race, run over a distance of approximately 7 furlongs, the Royal Hunt Cup was lengthened to a mile in 1955.

Trainer James Fanshawe has won the Royal Hunt Cup twice since the turn of the Millenium.
