The Hardwicke Stakes
The Hardwicke Stakes is a group 2 flat race that forms part of the racing schedule for the annual Royal Ascot meeting in June. The race is open to 4 year old and older thoroughbreds, and is run over a distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs. Each year the Hardwicke Stakes attracts some of the top stayers from the previous season.
Hardwicke Stakes History and Winners
The Hardwicke Stakes was first run in 1879, and was named after the 5th Duke of Hardwicke, Charles Phillip Yorke. More recently, the entry specifications for the race have been changed to provide a high quality race for 4 year old and older thoroughbreds, thereby keeping more of these racehorses in training past their second season.
The Hardwicke Stakes has produced a number of multiple winners, including Maraahel, Fruits of Love and Rock Hopper. Mark Johnston has been the most successful trainer in the race during the past decade, with four of his entries winning the Hardwicke Stakes.
