2009 Royal Ascot Preview

Posted on by editor

The 2009 Royal Ascot meeting gets underway on Tuesday, with 5 days of racing set to showcase the finest thoroughbred talent in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Europe. The festival will feature 30 races, including the largest collection of group races in England.

Royal pageantry, fashion and the glitz and glamour of the event won’t overshadow the business side of the event, with punters preparing for some of the best betting opportunities of the summer.

Day One
The 2009 Royal Ascot meeting gets underway with a trio of group 1 races -  the Queen Anne Stakes, King’s Stand Stakes and the St. James’s Palace Stakes. The St. James’s Palace Stakes is of particular interest as it will feature several familiar faces from the early-season Classics looking to notch up their first group 1 wins as 3-year-olds, including Delegator, Mastercraftsman and Evasive.

Day Two
The second day of the 2009 Royal Ascot meeting features the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, the joint richest race run at the meeting. Open to 4 year old and above thoroughbreds, the race will feature several of last season’s most impressive 3-year-olds running over the distance of 1 mile 2 furlongs. Dante Stakes winner Tartan Bearer heads the betting at present, and there’s great each-way value to be had on Never on a Sunday and Twice Over.

Day Three
Day three is Ladies Day at the 2009 Royal Ascot Meeting, and silly hats aside its all about the day’s feature race – the Ascot Gold Cup. The limelight is falling on three times winner, Yeats, for this race, and Aidan O’Brien’s antepost favourite could secure himself a place in the history books if he becomes the first thoroughbred to take 5 victories in the race.

Day Four
The crowds will pour into Ascot for Friday’s racing. The day’s highlight is the Coronation Stakes, which will feature several entries coming from the Irish and English 1,000 Guineas. Rainbow View is long overdue her first big performance as a 3-year-old and offers excellent value at 6/1 in the antepost markets for the race. Meanwhile 1,000 Guineas winner, Ghaanti, is the favourite to claim her second major group 1 win over a mile this season.

Day Five
The curtain comes down on the 2009 Royal Ascot meeting on Saturday, but not before racing fans have the opportunity to enjoy the heart-stopping Golden Jubilee Stakes. The Royal Ascot meeting’s most prestigious sprint is also the joint richest race at the festival, and JJ The Jet Plane is the 4/1 antepost favourite to win the 6 furlong cavalry charge on Saturday.
