It’s the turn of the stayers at Ascot today, with the Ladies Day feature race coming in the form of the 2 mile 4 furlong Ascot Gold Cup.
The buzz ahead of the race has focused on Aidan O’Brian’s Yeats, who will be looking to win his 4th Gold Cup title. Statistics and history suggest that Yeats won’t make it 4 wins today. While he’s arguably the finest stayer in the history of British flat racing, there should be enough young talent in the field to make the 8-year-old’s lack of pace show.
At outright odds of 2/1 we’d put a sentimental place punt on Yeats with the other good option being to lay him at Betfair for a 1/2 return if he loses.
According to the betting markets Geordieland and Patkai are the two entries most likely to end Yeats’s run in the Ascot Gold Cup. Both are proven stayers coming into the race off recent wins, and both look likely to finish in the money in the 2009 Ascot Gold Cup.
Our Tip…
Geordieland defeated Patkai in his most recent race (the 2 mile Henry II Stakes), which suggests he’s a worthwhile outright punt at 11/4. Patkai is worth a place bet at 3/1, as is Veracity. Punters looking for value further back could do worse than Eastern Anthem, who is untested over 2 miles but has been in top form in recent races and is an interesting each-way prospect at odds of 25/1.
